Shameless Sequels #2, Halloween 8.

by Mr.Trick (mrtrick1@hotmail.com)

The root of all sequel evil is in one word:money. People say it's the root of all evil, well it's also the root of all Hollywood evil. One fine example of this is Halloween H2K or whatever stupid title they've slapped it with this week. For the purpose of this I will call it H2K. Let me start off with a simple question with a difficult awnser. What the hell is the point of this?? So you killed the greatest, yes I did just say greatest, horror movie slasher of all time in a movie that was barely up to standards with a TNT Movie of the Week and made it damn predictable at the same time. I mean face it was there ever a doubt Mikey was going to bite it? Nope. Even the previews called it a "Fight to the death." Thrills and chills abound right?

Now if you're a Halloween fan the awnser to this question is more difficult. H20 sucked beyond belief I mean one of the true scary parts of the whole movie(Ronnie@the guard tower) was shown on every network including the Disney channel. There was too much media coverage and then there was Jamie Lee. Am I going to cut Jamie Lee? Yes,I am. Jamie Lee runs around to all these talk shows going "We wanted a horror movie and these newer ones are what I call scary movies." Lets just say I was more scared when I saw Bannanas and Pajamas. H20 wasn't the least bit scary. Urban Legends was scarier. I Still Know What You Did Last Summer was scarier. Batman and Robin was scarier. The Mario Brothers movie was scarier. See a trend here? And if you thought H20 was scary then you probably thought Disturbing Behavior was a good movie.

" The Mario Brothers movie was scarier. "
So you killed your killer off in a crappy made-for-cable sequel,so why make another? Forty-seven million dollars is a good excuse. So Moustapha Akkad, in all his brilliance decides that not only does he need more money, but that eight just isn't enough. So how are you going to bring the audience back? Well, lets kill off the heroine. Lets face it she did survive twenty years, but she needs to die. There goes the element of suprise for the opening. Anyone not picking Jamie Lee for the opening victim? Now everyone is going to see the movie just to see Jamie Lee get gutted. Lets face it the audience wants to see the main character die. I mean how many were shocked by Arlington Road's ending? I know I was. It was an average movie with an ending more shocking than who shot JR.
" Now everyone is going to see the movie just to see Jamie Lee get gutted. "
So in essence what is H2K,but another poor cash cow attempt at a dying franchise. No worse a dying genre. I mean lets face it the post-Scream world hasn't exactly been kind to horror movies. With crap like Wishmaster getting three and four sequels when the first one barely deserved to be made the decline of the horror genre is already underway. It is now sinking back into the blackhole that was the 80's. Sure there are a few good ones, but the rest are lame ripoffs of movies. Look at Urban Legends. Urban Legends was one of the better Scream ripoffs. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't a real good movie. However,it has now been destroyed by a poor attempt of a cash cow ripoff. Which gets me back to my original point. I do think I had one, which is: If you don't see the original you take away the money needed to fund a crappy sequel.
