Here's an interesting piece of info: it seems that Chevy Chase will only return to
Fletch and
Vacation if he can still play the leads. And...this is awesome news.
Though the idea is to cast a younger actor in the role of Irwin ‘Fletch’ Fletcher in the on-again off-again on-again “Fletch” reboot, and it’s been reported that original star Chevy Chase would likely be back for some kind of cameo, the actor says he won’t be doing the film unless he’s the one playing the investigative reporter.
Chase, who played the role in both “Fletch” and “Fletch Lives”, tells Collider that he’ll only do a new “Fletch” film if he’s playing the title role.
I’m not gonna do Fletch unless I’m Fletch, if they start writing something for a kid who’s Fletch and I’m just helping out, “Bye.” I mean, there’s no reason why, at my age, I can’t still be Fletch. I’ve always been getting this impression that they’d like me to be mentoring a younger Fletch type thing. No, what am I James Coburn on a Western? No. Nothing against James Coburn, he’s great. Is he alive? Yeah I think he is. I think he’s very much alive.
Funnily enough, Warners are also rebooting another of Chase’s popular franchises, “Vacation”, and plan to only have him play a supporting role in it. Chase, seemingly not too keen on that idea, says that he’s written his own ‘rival’ “Vacation” script with his on-screen Mrs, Beverly D’Angelo.
I’ve written an idea that would be basically like a “Swiss Family Griswold.” There’s a cruise, there’s a fire on the ship, we think the whole ship’s on fire and we jump—it’s just a little fire—and we end up on an island where we meet Randy somewhere who’s been left there from an old Survivor series. I like that idea. It’s hard to sell these things to the Warners people. It depends on who’s there and what their mood is and what they think people are gonna like.
Yeah, I think anything featuring ‘Randy Quaid’ is gonna be a hard sell these days Chevy… but you starring in a new “Fletch” or “Vacation” movie? Yes, that I’m sure we’d all like.
