Akira, who is a member of the 14 member Japanese pop group EXILE, is going to play the lead character in Onizuka. The original manga spawned a live action TV drama, an anime and a movie.
The story of a gang-member-turned-teacher is one of the most popular stories to come around in manga and anime.
Other casting news includes Miori Takimoto will play Azusa Fuyutsuki and Hitomi Kuroki is principal Sakurai Ryoko, while Yuu Shirota plays Ryuji Danma.
Great Teacher Onizuka's live action TV show will premiere on Tuesday at 10pm in July on Fuji TV.
