'American Reunion' Beats 'Titanic 3D' At The Box Office

So what if Titanic was originally released 15 years ago, upon its re-release it has been beaten out by The Hunger Games (no surprise here) and, most importantly -- a sequel, American Reunion.

American Reunion, the fourth theatrical release in the franchise, finished the Friday box office at number two ($9.2 million), second to The Hunger Games, but ahead of Titanic 3D ($7.1 million).

Now don't get me wrong, Titanic is the superior of all three films, but this just goes to show that sequels still have a place in modern cinema.  Hell, they may be more relevant now than they've ever been.  Especially with series like Harry Potter, Twilight, Lord of the Rings, and now The Hunger Games (which is currently scoping for a new director for its sequel, Catching Fire).

I won't get too ahead of myself just yet.  I'll wait and see how the entire weekend plays out.  Who knows -- maybe American Reunion could catapult into the number one spot (wishful thinking?).
