There were two candidates as to who was going to direct Catching Fire and since The Hunger Games stars Jennifer Lawrence, why not get a director who also has the last name of Lawrence? Francis Lawrence may all but be your new director. You may not recognize Francis Lawrence's name but you may remember the films he directed. Or maybe not. I Am Legend and Constantine were arguably mediocre and forgettable action thrillers. His most recent film was Water For Elephants which starred Twilight star Robert Pattinson. Bennett Miller of Moneyball and Capote, was the other front runner.
Now, I personally didn't care for I Am Legend or Constantine but since he is still a fairly new director, he can still show he has what it takes to be a great director. Catching Fire is all but going to make at least $400 million dollars in the box office so why wouldn't he take this job? I'm not completely satisfied by this choice but he may surprise me. I hope he cleans up those action scenes but I won't go there again.
Some other directors considered for the job included Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu, Cary Fukunaga, Joe Cornish, Tomas Alfredson and Duncan Jones. David Cronenberg and Alfonso Cuaron were also considered.
While their hasn't been an official statement of Lawrence becoming the director, it's Lawrences' game to lose. We will keep you posted as to whether he does, in fact, get the job.
What do you think? Do you think Lawrence is the right choice? If not Lawrence, then who should direct Catching Fire? Let us know in the comments below.
