'Mortal Kombat' Going Online

GET OVER HERE!

The classic fighting game series that spawned two feature films, an animated series, comic books, action figures, and so on is going back to it's darker roots. Today, Bloody-Disgusting.com broke the news that there will be a 10 episode web series for Mortal Kombat, directed by Kevin Tancharoen. You may remember his short from last year, which touted itself as a promo for a new Mortal Kombat "reboot" movie. The movie wasn't real - it was just an attempt to get Warner Bros to buy his idea - but the critical and fan reactions were overwelmingly positive! Afterwards, Tancharoen was overloaded with pleas from fans to make this short become a reality. The owners of the Mortal Kombat game series were also pleased by what he came up with, which was a much more realistic and gritty story. It featured fan favorites such as Scorpion, Sonya Blade, and Jax.

As for the new web series, it will be penned by Tancharoen, Todd Helbing, and Aaron Helbing. Michael Jai White leads the cast as Major Jackson 'Jax' Briggs. Shooting will take place in Vancouver this coming February. No word yet if the other actors from the original short, such as Jeri Ryan as Sonya, will return. Other rumored characters are Shang Tsung, Liu Kang, Sub Zero, "Durak" (a new guy, I suppose), Kabal, Kitana, and Mileena.

Below is the original short, "Mortal Kombat Rebirth".

This is sounding like it could be a lot of fun.

To get a positive review from this fanboy though, Sonya's going to have to be in it!
